Mowing: What you might not know!

This past week, it seemed like my lawn all of a sudden decided it was time to really grow! I mean really grow! So, of course that means it is time to fire up the lawn mower. If you find yourself in a home that requires you to care for the lawn, there are some things about mowing that you may have not realized. Even those who have been mowing for years, read below to realize some common misconceptions that come with taking care of your yard this year.

Bagging your grass clippings after mowing is a pretty common practice. It can make the yard seem more "finished" once everything is cleaned up, but here is the part you may not have realized. It is actually better for your yard to leave your grass clippings on the lawn after you mow. The cut grass is full of nutrients that act as a natural fertilizer to your lawn.

If I cut my grass short, I won't have to mow so often right? Actually, not quite. When you cut the grass as short as possible, it actually grows quicker to try and regenerate itself from nearly being destroyed by being cut to such a short length. The best bet is to mow the grass to about 3-4 inches. This helps you maintain a healthier lawn and doesn't necessarily mean you will need to mow more.

Lastly, having your blades sharpened every year can make a huge difference in the appearance of your lawn. When the blades become dull, it actually rips the grass instead of cutting it. This can leave you with uneven grass.

Now that you know the truth about some of these mowing misconceptions, I hope you have a great Spring and Summer with a beautiful lawn!
